Computational Cost Optimization of High-Performance Bioinformatics Applications in Computer Clouds

Coordinator: Lúcia Maria de Assumpção Drummond

Applications of national strategic importance, such as those used in the Oil and Gas industry, meteorology and areas of biodiversity and health, depend on High Performance Computing (HPC) to provide accurate results quickly. Many current problems increasingly depend on handling unprecedented volumes of data, which makes solving them in a timely manner increasingly challenging and expensive. Well established in the area of distributed services, offering pre-configured sets of virtualized instances that can be easily provisioned and dynamically scaled on demand, cloud computing is continually transforming, providing a cheaper alternative to conventional computer centers.

By sharing resources, clouds offer users several advantages over dedicated infrastructure, in particular, significant cost reduction, access to state-of-the-art hardware and no worries about maintenance. However, despite the advantages, a number of challenges still need to be faced, including: choosing and adapting appropriate sets of instances to maximize performance; how to make application execution impervious to interference due to sharing resources in the cloud. This project aims to improve the management of running HPC applications in the cloud.

Using bioinformatics applications as a case study, the project focuses on aspects that impact performance and financial cost without violating service level agreements, including: the adoption of vertical elasticity of resources for the efficient and scalable use of each virtual instance(machines virtual or containers); the dynamic scheduling of application tasks in virtual instances, and; robustness through fault tolerance mechanisms to handle failures or revocations of cloud resources. More efficient cloud computing benefits providers, users, society and the environment.
